C’mon, we know you’ve had this on your bucket list for years.
So what’s it like in real life? Thrilling, amazing, fascinating, educational, wild, crazy, fun – all of these things. What it’s not? Scary. If you don’t believe us, then try it for yourself!
The lowdown: Pick up time is based on the weather (more specifically the wind), but you can do a morning or an afternoon dive. Dropped off at the marine centre, a snack, and minimal paperwork are had, after which you’re off to a special boat with assigned gear in hand. Fifteen minutes with the wind in your hair takes you from the dock to dive spot, where deckhands churn the water with homemade chum. A cage is lowered into the water and affixed to the boat. You change into a wetsuit – a very thick wetsuit – and when it’s your turn, you get into the cage with seven other people dressed in a mask and snorkel.
The sharks come, big and small, few and plenty, it all depends on the day. Beneath the water, GoPro ready, you see their world and capture it. They see you, but hardly care, as there’s bait in the water that’s much more appealing than you. Not to worry, there is no way those sharks are getting through that cage you’re in unless you are part of a Steven Spielberg feature film. You come home with photos and stories to warrant comments on Facebook for months! Cue regret for those who think a shark dive is “too scary”.
Note: All-you-can-eat snacks and drinks aplenty.
